advanced learning opportunities
Gifted and Talented is a district program for third through fifth grade students who are eligible for accelerated learning. Students are nominated by their teachers and chosen for the program based on test scores. Read more about the Gifted and Talented Program.
Both middle schools offer advanced math, Algebra I, and English language arts classes. These classes prepare students for jobs and for college. Students are given more responsibility for their learning while being guided by their teacher. They develop a deeper understanding of mathematical practices and learn how to build critical thinking and communication skills.
In keeping with our long standing tradition of providing advanced opportunities for our gifted students, Roseville Community Schools will be adding six new Advanced Placement courses to Roseville High School's curriculum. AP Calculus, AP Human Geography, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics and AP World History will be available in the Fall of 2017 for high school students. These courses are in addition to the existing AP classes that Roseville High School currently offers, which includes English Literature, English Composition, U.S. History, U.S. Government, Biology and Chemistry. Advanced Placement courses give students the opportunity to test for college credits upon completion.
AP Calculus is roughly equivalent to a first semester college calculus course, covering concepts and skills of limits, derivatives, definite integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. AP Human Geography will allow students to learn about the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of the Earth's surface. In AP Psychology, students will explore the concepts, theories, perspectives, phenomena and behaviors associated with the subfields and research areas, while analyzing the methods psychologists use to study various types of behavior and mental processes.
In AP Environmental Science, students will participate in hands-on, laboratory and field investigations to apply scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies in order to better understand our natural systems and to critically think about environmental issues and potential solutions. AP Physics will be offered for students to explore concepts such as kinematics, Newton’s Laws of Motion, systems of particles and linear momentum, circular motion and rotation, oscillations, and gravitation. AP World History takes students through the early culture of the Asian, African, Muslim and European worlds, while examining and analyzing the impact of demographic, technological, environmental, political, and economic changes on people. In addition to the new courses, AP U.S. History and AP Government, which were offered on an every other year basis, will now be offered yearly.
Roseville High School Principal Patrick Adams says that one of the measures of an academically challenging culture in a secondary school is the participation rate and the success rate of students in Advanced Placement courses. "With these proposed additions, we aim to positively affect the participation rate in AP courses in each of the four cores: English, mathematics, science, and social studies." Roseville Community Schools Director of Curriculum Dave Rice says that the district is very excited about the increase in AP opportunities at RHS next year. "Mr. Adams initiated the expansion, and the Superintendent and instructional department saw great value in his plan." Rice added that the high school will be working diligently during scheduling this spring to recruit and encourage students to take the more challenging classes. "Mr. Adams has a goal of doubling the number of RHS students currently enrolled in AP courses this year."
